Best Privacy Hedges for Coastal Homes: Newport, Malibu, Santa Monica

Ocean air is hard on the wrong hedge: salt-scorched leaf edges, thin growth on the windward face, a wall that never quite fills. Within a couple miles of the water, choose species that treat the marine layer as a feature.

The coastal shortlist

Purple hopseed (Dodonaea viscosa) — the standout. Airy, bronze-purple, and genuinely water-wise; salt wind and lean coastal soil are exactly its weather. Podocarpus gracilior — handles ocean air gracefully with soft texture that fits beach architecture. Texas privet — tougher than its formal looks suggest; solid to the second block from the sand.

Use with care near the water

Ficus grows magnificently in coastal LA and OC generally — Santa Monica is full of it — but directly on the oceanfront, salt spray can burn the glossy foliage. One street back it is usually happy. Italian cypress dislikes constant marine humidity; it earns its keep inland.
