Ficus nitida

Indian Laurel Fig

The Southern California privacy workhorse. Dense, glossy, and fast — the quickest route to a solid green wall.

Best for: Maximum density fast, road noise, close neighbors

GROWTH: Fast — ~2.5 ft per year
MATURE HT: Up to 25 ft (held 10–20 ft as a hedge)
PRIVACY: Immediate at box sizes; a solid wall within 1–2 seasons
WATER: Moderate; drought-tolerant once established

Syzygium paniculatum

Australian Brush Cherry

One of the fastest formal screens in SoCal. Glossy, tight foliage with coppery new growth — shears into a crisp wall.

Best for: Formal clipped hedges, fast screening, coppery accent

GROWTH: Fast — ~3 ft per year
MATURE HT: Up to 20 ft (held 8–15 ft as a hedge)
PRIVACY: Fills into a formal wall quickly at close spacing
WATER: Moderate

Prunus caroliniana

Carolina Cherry

A tough, dark-green California classic. Dense evergreen screen that shears clean and handles heat and drought.

Best for: Drought-tolerant screens, deep green formal walls

GROWTH: Moderate–fast — ~2.5 ft per year
MATURE HT: Up to 20 ft (held 8–15 ft as a hedge)
PRIVACY: A solid screen within a couple seasons
WATER: Low once established

Podocarpus gracilior

Fern Pine

Soft, fine-textured, and nearly maintenance-free. The designer's choice for a refined, disease-resistant screen.

Best for: Clean modern homes, no invasive roots, coastal air

GROWTH: Moderate — ~2 ft per year
MATURE HT: Up to 25 ft (held 10–20 ft as a hedge)
PRIVACY: Immediate at box sizes; fills over ~2 seasons
WATER: Low once established

Ligustrum japonicum 'Texanum'

Texas Privet

A classic formal hedge — dense, deep green, and happy with shearing. Waxy leaves, white spring blooms, modest water.

Best for: Traditional homes, tidy 6–10 ft hedges, low water bills

GROWTH: Moderate — ~1.75 ft per year
MATURE HT: 8–12 ft
PRIVACY: Fills the gap quickly; tops out low as a tidy hedge
WATER: Low

Cupressus sempervirens

Italian Cypress

Tall, columnar, unmistakably Mediterranean. A dramatic vertical statement that needs almost no width.

Best for: Narrow side yards, driveways, Tuscan & Spanish homes

GROWTH: Moderate — ~2 ft per year
MATURE HT: Up to 40 ft, only 3–5 ft wide
PRIVACY: Vertical screening on day one at box sizes
WATER: Very low

Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea'

Purple Hopseed

Fast, drought-tough, and bronze-purple. A relaxed, water-wise screen with movement and warm color.

Best for: Water-wise screens, warm color, informal privacy

GROWTH: Fast — ~2.5 ft per year
MATURE HT: Up to 15 ft (held 8–12 ft as a hedge)
PRIVACY: Fast, if a touch airier than Ficus
WATER: Very low

Buxus microphylla japonica

Japanese Boxwood

The classic low, tight formal hedge. Slow but extremely dense — the crispest small clipped edge there is.

Best for: Low formal borders, parterres, tight clipped edges

GROWTH: Slow — ~9 in per year
MATURE HT: 5–6 ft (usually kept 1–3 ft)
PRIVACY: Slow to knit, but formal and tight once it does
WATER: Moderate
