Deposits, payments, and California law

Residential construction payments in California are regulated for good reason. Here's exactly how we comply — and how to spot a contractor who doesn't.

The deposit cap: 10% or $1,000

Under California Business & Professions Code §7159(d), a down payment on a home improvement contract may not exceed 10% of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less. Our checkout computes this automatically — on a $30,000 hedge, your deposit is $1,000, not $3,000.

Progress payments match work performed

The law also prohibits collecting payment that exceeds the value of work performed and materials delivered. Our 40% pre-install payment is collected no earlier than the day before installation, when your trees have been purchased, tagged, and scheduled for delivery to your property. The final 50% is due only on completion, after your walkthrough.

Your contract and cancellation rights

Before work begins you receive a written home improvement contract with the statutory notices: the three-business-day right to cancel (five days for homeowners 65+), mechanics lien warnings, and CSLB contact information. Keep it — it protects you.

Verify any contractor's license at cslb.ca.gov. Ours is CSLB license pending. If any contractor asks for half the job up front, show them this page.
