Ficus vs. Podocarpus: Which Privacy Hedge Should You Plant?

This is the most common fork in the road, and the answer is almost always decided by two things: how fast you need privacy, and what sits near the planting line.

Speed: ficus wins

Ficus grows about 2.5 feet a year and knits into a solid wall faster than anything we install. Podocarpus grows closer to 2 feet a year with a finer, softer face. From equal starting sizes, ficus reaches full privacy a season or so sooner.

Roots: podocarpus wins

Podocarpus roots are non-invasive — plant it tight against pools, walls, and plumbing without a second thought. Ficus roots are vigorous and need a trenched root barrier ($14.91/ft) near hardscape.

Look and feel

Ficus gives the formal, flat-sheared Hollywood wall. Podocarpus reads softer and more contemporary, with blue-green texture that moves in the breeze.

The decision rule

Hardscape within ~4 feet, or a strong preference for soft texture: podocarpus. Maximum privacy per month on an open line: ficus, with a root barrier where the site calls for it. The install price is identical either way — at any container size the two cost exactly the same, so choose on roots and texture, not budget.
