When to Plant a Hedge in Southern California (Honest Answer: Almost Anytime)

In most of the country, planting season is a real constraint. In coastal Southern California it is mostly a scheduling preference: the ground never freezes, and with drip irrigation, container-grown hedges establish successfully all twelve months.

The windows, ranked

Fall (Oct–Dec) is the professional favorite: warm soil grows roots all winter while cool air asks little of the leaves, and the hedge explodes in spring. Spring (Feb–Apr) is a close second. Summer works fine with drip — establishment just drinks more. There is no bad month, only lazier irrigation.

The practical answer

Plant when you need the privacy. A hedge installed in July with proper drip beats a hedge postponed to a theoretical perfect October — by exactly three months of growth.
