Why LA's estates chose the ficus
Dense, glossy, evergreen, and fast — Ficus nitida takes shearing like architecture and fills into a solid visual wall with almost no gaps. It grows two to three feet a year, reaches 25–30 feet at maturity, and reads formal at any height. That's why the “Hollywood hedge” became shorthand for privacy done beautifully: it blocks second-story sightlines, softens street noise, and raises the whole street's standard.
Real prices, per foot
We publish our numbers — most contractors won't. Installed, including soil preparation along the line, staking, haul-off, and an establishment warranty on every tree:
PER-FOOT FIGURES ASSUME STANDARD SPACING. YOUR DRAWN LINE GIVES THE EXACT FIXED PRICE.
One honest caveat: the roots
Ficus roots are vigorous. Near pools, driveways, and foundations we recommend — and for close plantings, insist on — a trenched HDPE root barrier, priced from your exact footage as a one-tap add-on. If the hedge must sit directly against hardscape and you'd rather not manage roots at all, podocarpus is the gentler-rooted alternative we'll steer you toward honestly.
Install day
Trees arrive hand-tagged from the grower. The line is trenched and amended, every tree set plumb and staked, drip irrigation tied in if you've added it, and every scrap hauled off before the crew leaves. Most Hollywood hedges are planted in a single day, reserved with a small deposit.
Hollywood hedge FAQ
How tall can it get?
25–30 feet at maturity — most estate hedges are maintained between 10 and 18 feet. Local ordinances treat tall hedges differently by city; see our FAQ and confirm your city's rules.
How fast do I get privacy?
36" box trees stand 10–12 feet on day one — instant screening. 15-gallon rows typically knit into full privacy in 2–3 seasons at 2–3 feet of growth per year.
What spacing do you plant at?
2.5 to 5 feet on center depending on box size — tighter for small stock, wider for boxed trees. Your quote computes the exact tree count from your drawn line.
