SoCal Hedge field guide

Carolina cherry — Prunus caroliniana — is the low-drama workhorse of the group: a dense, dark-green evergreen that asks for very little and gives you a solid screen in return. Where brush cherry is glossy and formal and hopseed is airy, Carolina cherry is quietly tough — the one you plant when you want a hedge that just works.

Growth and size

Moderate-fast, roughly two and a half feet a year, to a mature height near 20 feet; most hedges are kept between 8 and 15. It shears tight into a formal wall or grows a touch looser for a fuller, informal screen — your call.

Spacing and sizes

We plant 5- and 15-gallon stock about 3 feet on center and 24-inch boxes at 3 feet for immediate coverage. A 15-gallon is $129 per tree installed and a 24-inch box $435 — the same as every other species at those sizes, since we price on container, not plant. Choose Carolina cherry for its toughness, not its cost.

Where it fits

Sun or part shade, inland or coastal, good soil or bad — it is one of the more adaptable screens we install, and genuinely drought-tolerant once established. Excellent along back property lines and slopes where you want reliable privacy without babying it.

A little history

Despite the name, Carolina cherry laurel is a Southeastern U.S. native, long valued there as a hedge and windbreak. It took to California's Mediterranean climate easily and has become a standard drought-tolerant evergreen for screening across the state.

Honest caveats

The spring flowers give way to small black fruit and a little litter, and the foliage is not one to plant where livestock browse. For a spotless formal face, brush cherry or ficus edges it — but for tough, low-water privacy, little beats it.
