1. How fast do you need privacy?
Yesterday: ficus, or any species in a 36-inch box. Two to three seasons is fine: 15-gallon rows of anything. Ficus is the fastest grower; privet and podocarpus reward patience.
2. What's near the planting line?
Pool, spa, plumbing, or foundation within a few feet: podocarpus, or ficus with a root barrier. Open fence line with nothing to protect: any species, no barrier.
3. Coast or inland?
Salt air favors podocarpus and pittosporum. Hot inland valleys favor ficus, privet, and cypress. Everything grows in the middle.
4. What's the look?
Formal flat wall: ficus or privet. Soft and modern: podocarpus or Silver Sheen. Mediterranean columns: Italian cypress.
5. What's the budget?
