Italian Cypress vs. Ficus Along a Driveway

Columns or a wall? How to screen a driveway when width is tight and cars need clearance.

Driveways punish wide plants. Between car clearance, sight lines, and usually a property line within a few feet, you have less width than any other planting situation on the lot.

When cypress wins

Under 4 feet of planting width, cypress is the only honest answer: 30+ feet of height in a 3-foot footprint, no barrier needed, drought-proof, and a rhythm of columns that flatters Mediterranean and Spanish homes.

When ficus wins

With 5+ feet of width and a hunger for solid screening, a sheared ficus wall covers ground-to-top with no gaps between columns. Plant it with a root barrier on the driveway side — concrete and ficus roots need the separation.
