Italian Cypress: Vertical Privacy for Narrow Spaces

Italian cypress solves the problem no other hedge can: real height in almost no width. A mature cypress stands 30–40 feet tall and barely 3–4 feet wide — vertical privacy for side yards, driveways, and property lines where a ficus wall simply will not fit.

Screening strategy

Planted at 5-foot centers, cypress reads as a rhythm of columns immediately and closes into a continuous screen over a few seasons. For instant coverage, tighter spacing or larger boxes do the job on day one — a 36-inch box cypress arrives already commanding.

Conditions

Full sun, excellent drainage, and very low water once established — the most drought-tolerant plant we install. It is happiest inland and in Mediterranean-style plantings from Santa Barbara wine country to Tuscan-styled hillsides in Calabasas.

A little history

Cupressus sempervirens — 'always living' — has marked Mediterranean landscapes since antiquity: Persian gardens, Roman villas, Tuscan roads, Van Gogh's skies. The California missions brought the silhouette here, and it has signified Mediterranean elegance on our hillsides ever since.

Honest caveats

Cypress wants sun and hates wet feet; soggy soil is its one enemy. And it is a column, not a wall — for solid ground-to-top screening along an open fence line, a ficus or podocarpus hedge covers more, faster.
