SoCal Hedge field guide

Newport rewards the right coastal species and punishes the wrong ones. The marine layer that keeps summers perfect also delivers salt to every leaf within a mile of the water.

The Newport shortlist

Pittosporum Silver Sheen — the signature choice, silver texture against white coastal architecture. Podocarpus — soft, salt-tolerant, pool-safe for the backyard resorts of Newport Heights and Dover Shores. Privet — dependable structure a few blocks inland. Ficus grows well through most of Newport but earns a caution directly on the front.

Local notes

Sandy soils drain fast — amendment and drip matter doubly. Many Port-street and island lots are compact: hedges do the fence's job in half the visual weight. HOA design review applies in several communities; our written scope makes that submission easy.
