Growth and form

Moderate to fast — one and a half to two feet a year to roughly 12–18 feet. It takes shearing well but is at its best slightly soft, clipped into a loose plane rather than a hard box. Filtered light passes through it beautifully, which designers use deliberately.

Conditions

Coastal air, part sun to full sun, moderate water. Silver Sheen handles Santa Monica and Newport marine layers happily. Inland heat is workable with steady irrigation; in the hottest valleys, ficus or privet is the safer bet.

A little history

Pittosporum tenuifolium is a New Zealand native — 'kohuhu' to the Maori — bred into dozens of ornamental forms. 'Silver Sheen' emerged as the designer favorite for its shimmer, arriving in California nurseries in force in the 1990s as modern architecture went looking for softer companions.
